SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily)—The battle is over signatures for a petition to the council-approved Axon development on the ballot becomes ugly.

The political action committee Taxpayers Against Awful Zoning Exemptions (TAAAZE) reports that it has collected 12,000 signatures of the 15,000+ needed by the December 21 deadline.

The PAC is seeking to block the local company’s proposed headquarters and housing development.

Axon sells technology to law enforcement and the military and plans to build more than 1,900 apartments/condos on the property at Loop 101 and Hayden. Critics are concerned about the traffic and crowds it would bring to the city.

Scottsdale residents may see some confrontation between the two groups over signatures.

Last Thursday, Scottsdale police said a Basha employee called about a man who was allegedly aggressive toward customers while trying to get them to sign the Axon petition.

Police stopped the man, identified as 33-year-old Brandon Brown, as he drove away and noticed his driver’s license had been revoked. He was arrested and his vehicle was towed. Police said Brown does not live in Scottsdale or Arizona.

Arizona’s family asked TAAAZE about the incident and arrest. Former councilor Bob Littlefield, who heads the PAC, said: “We have no evidence that there was any ‘aggressive’ behavior by Brandon or anyone else on our team, and we don’t even know that the store manager called the police …the only people who are aggressive are the blockers.”

On TAAAZE’s website, the group says it is funded by TAAAZE with “0% out-of-state contributors.”

Arizona’s family asked Littlefield if Brown had been paid by TAAAZE to collect signatures and if anyone was funding their campaign, Littlefield did not answer.

Arizona’s family contacted Axon about the incident and their spokesman, Dave Leibowitz, responded: “The fact that they enlisted criminals to do their dirty work is beyond unfortunate. It’s dangerous.”

Axon responded to TAAAZE’s accusation that Axon is paying people to ‘block’ the public from signing the petition.

Axon said they don’t physically block anyone, but they have people standing next to the submitters to inform people of what they are signing.
